Hoe Yin Chan was enlightened and encouraged to work even more

Oboist, English horn player Hoe Yin Chan from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, attended the Sibelius Summer Academy programme woodwind week in June. In Malaysia he has studied with Simon Emes, the principal oboe of Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra and he is currently undertaking his bachelor’s degree in Taipei with Prof. Chien-Chih Hung.

- During the SIbelius Summer Academy woodwind course I was very moved by the passionate faculty. It was my great pleasure to meet Anni Haapaniemi and Veera Pesu here, as well as Sanna Niemikunnas and Kalev Kuljus! The programmes were well structured and we went through some essential repertoire for oboe and also some famous orchestra excerpts. That’s very useful! Also, the evening concerts and side courses were wonderful. Certainly by participating this course I got to see how much I have achieved, and how far still to go. The advice of the teachers enlightened me in every way and encouraged me to try harder.

Mr. Chan was also one of he performers in the woodwind matinées, organized in the Helsinki Music Centre and also in the Oodi central library. He interpreted wonderfully the beloved Swan of Tuonela by Jean Sibelius

- For me, it was one of the most memorable moments during the week. It was also exciting and I was anxious to play Sibelius’s work in front of native Finnish audience. Luckily I have wonderful support from pianist Matilda Kärkkäinen, and I really appreciate this opportunity.

Chan valjues the cultural exchange and mind-opening opportunity. He thinks that by participating in international programme like this, students can explore and learn from people around the world about their opinions, and interpretation of music.

- I think the programme is suitable for all the conservatory students to take part in, and I truly fell in love with this campus and therefore I would urge those music students who are interested in pursuing music studies (including myself), to try and apply for Uniarts. I truly enjoyed the finest Finnish hospitality during the summer course and if I have the opportunity to come again, I definitely will.
